I always wished my students cared enough to cheat. I tried assigning home reading one semester – it was futile. I always read in class for depth, and flip a big middle finger at breadth.
I certainly see the futility of trying to assign reading in my non-AP classes. In those English 12 classes, if we don’t read the book in class, very few read it. What I’m begining to wonder, however, is how many of my AP kids are guilty of this. In those classes I DO assign take home reading, and even there I see a marked drop in participation once we start talking about the nuts and bolts of the books.
